The Garden Route is, quite simply, the greatest road trip in Africa. Stretching from the whale-haunted shores of Hermanus to the elephant-rich valleys of Addo, this 750-kilometre ribbon of coastline weaves through indigenous forests, past turquoise lagoons, over dramatic mountain passes, and along cliffs that plunge into the Indian Ocean. It is the journey that every South Africa visitor dreams about — and the one that never disappoints.

At Beyond Africa Safaris, we've driven this route hundreds of times, and we still discover new favourites. This day-by-day itinerary distils everything we've learned into a practical, comprehensive guide — whether you're self-driving or joining our 5-Day Self-Drive Explorer or fully guided 5-Day Garden Route Tour.

Garden Route at a Glance

Total distance: ~750 km (Cape Town to Addo) | Recommended duration: 5–7 days | Best time: October to April (warm, long days; whale season peaks June–November) | Road conditions: Excellent tarred N2 throughout | Malaria: No

Day 1 — Cape Town to Hermanus (120 km)

Morning: Depart Cape Town via Clarence Drive

Leave Cape Town early and take the R44 coastal road through Gordon's Bay and along Clarence Drive — rated one of the most spectacular coastal drives on Earth. The road clings to sheer cliffs with the Atlantic crashing below and the Kogelberg mountains towering above. Stop at Stony Point in Betty's Bay to see the African penguin colony (far less crowded than Boulders Beach).

Afternoon: Hermanus — Whale Capital of the World

Hermanus is famous for the closest land-based whale watching on the planet. From June to November, Southern Right whales calve just metres from the cliff path. Even outside whale season, the town charms with its craft breweries, seafood restaurants, and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve hiking trails. Book our Hermanus Whale Watching Tour for the best vantage points and expert marine commentary.

Where to stay: The Marine Hotel (luxury), Harbour House Hotel (mid-range), Hermanus Backpackers (budget).

Day 2 — Hermanus to Mossel Bay (290 km)

Morning: Overberg Farmlands & Route 62 Detour

Head east through the rolling Overberg farmlands. If you have time, detour inland via Route 62 through Barrydale and the charming village of Montagu — South Africa's longest wine route, with fewer tourists and more character than the Winelands.

Afternoon: Mossel Bay — Where the Garden Route Officially Begins

Mossel Bay marks the official western gateway to the Garden Route. Visit the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex, where a life-size replica of Dias's caravel sits in the harbour. For adrenaline, try the St Blaize Hiking Trail along the cliff edge, or simply enjoy the warmest sea temperatures on the Garden Route at Santos Beach.

Day 3 — Mossel Bay to Knysna (110 km)

Morning: Oudtshoorn Detour — Cango Caves & Ostrich Farms

Take the dramatic Outeniqua Pass inland to Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world. Our Cango Caves & Ostrich Farm Tour includes the awe-inspiring Cango Caves — a 20-million-year-old limestone cathedral — and a visit to a working ostrich farm where you can meet these extraordinary birds up close.

Afternoon: Knysna — Jewel of the Garden Route

Knysna is the Garden Route's crown jewel. The town sits on a glittering lagoon guarded by two dramatic sandstone cliffs — the Knysna Heads. Take our Knysna Heads & Lagoon Cruise for sunset views that will live in your memory forever, or paddle through the lagoon on our Kayak & Oyster Tour, tasting freshly shucked Knysna oysters on the water.

Where to stay: Pezula Resort (luxury), Knysna Hollow (mid-range), Island Vibe Knysna (budget). Spend two nights here — Knysna deserves lingering.

Day 4 — Knysna & Plettenberg Bay (35 km)

Morning: Knysna Forest — Ancient Giants

The Knysna Forest is one of the largest indigenous forests in South Africa, home to 800-year-old yellowwood trees and the legendary (and incredibly elusive) Knysna elephants. Walk the Garden of Eden boardwalk or the more challenging Elephant Trail — keep your eyes open for the Knysna Turaco, one of Africa's most beautiful birds.

Afternoon: Plettenberg Bay — Beach Paradise

A short drive east brings you to Plettenberg Bay — arguably the most beautiful beach town on the Garden Route. Robberg Nature Reserve offers a spectacular 3-hour circular hike with views of seals, dolphins, and (in season) whales. Book our Plettenberg Bay Marine Wildlife Explorer for ocean encounters with bottlenose dolphins, Cape fur seals, and seasonal humpback whales.

Day 5 — Plettenberg Bay to Storms River (70 km)

Morning: Nature's Valley & Bloukrans Bridge

Drive through the Tsitsikamma mountains to Nature's Valley, a pristine village where the forest meets a wild beach. Stop at Bloukrans Bridge — the world's highest commercial bungee jump at 216 metres. Even if you don't jump, watching from the bridge is unforgettable. Thrill-seekers should book our Bloukrans Bridge Bungee & Storms River package.

Afternoon: Tsitsikamma National Park

Tsitsikamma is the Garden Route's grand finale. This ancient forest-meets-ocean park offers the famous Suspension Bridge hike over the Storms River Mouth, kayaking up the gorge, and some of the most dramatic coastline in South Africa. Our Tsitsikamma Day Hike covers the best trails with an expert guide, while our Tsitsikamma Adventure Day adds tubing, ziplines, and canopy tours for the adventurous.

Day 6–7 — Storms River to Addo Elephant Park (180 km)

The drive from Storms River to Addo crosses the Baviaans landscape into the Sundays River Valley, home to Addo Elephant National Park — the only Big Seven park on Earth (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, plus great white shark and southern right whale in the marine section). Spend a full day on game drives spotting Addo's 600+ elephants, then continue to Port Elizabeth airport for your onward journey — or loop back to Cape Town.

Self-Drive vs. Guided Tour — Which Is Right for You?

Self-drive offers maximum flexibility and is perfect for independent travellers. South Africa drives on the left, roads are excellent, and car rental is affordable. Our Self-Drive Explorer provides a curated itinerary, pre-booked accommodation, and 24/7 support.

Guided tours remove all planning stress and add expert narration, hidden stops, and local connections you'd never find alone. Our 5-Day Garden Route Explorer is the most popular guided option, covering Hermanus to Tsitsikamma with handpicked accommodation.

Practical Tips for Your Garden Route Road Trip

What to Pack

Layers (weather changes fast), a waterproof jacket, comfortable hiking shoes, sunscreen (UV is intense year-round), binoculars for whale and bird watching, and a camera with a good zoom lens.

Fuel & Supplies

Petrol stations are plentiful along the N2. All towns have supermarkets, ATMs, and restaurants. Credit cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for farm stalls and small vendors.

How long should a Garden Route road trip be?

Five days is the minimum to hit the highlights without rushing. Seven days lets you linger in Knysna and explore Tsitsikamma properly. If you can stretch to 10 days, add the Route 62 wine route, Addo, and a beach day in Plettenberg Bay.

Is the Garden Route safe for self-driving?

Extremely safe. The N2 is a well-maintained national highway with clear signage. Drive during daylight hours, lock your car at stops, and you'll have a stress-free journey. Our team provides 24/7 roadside support for self-drive guests.

What is the best month to drive the Garden Route?

December to March offers the warmest weather and longest days. September to November combines whale season with spring wildflowers and fewer crowds. June to August is cool but dry — ideal for hiking with dramatic skies.
