A breathtaking stretch of coastline between Mossel Bay and Storms River, featuring ancient forests, dramatic cliffs, and charming seaside towns.
The Garden Route is South Africa's most scenic coastal stretch — a 300-kilometre paradise winding between Mossel Bay and Storms River along the southern Cape coast. Ancient forests, dramatic sea cliffs, turquoise lagoons, and charming coastal towns create one of the world's great road trip destinations, regularly featured in National Geographic, Condé Nast Traveler, and Lonely Planet.
The Garden Route earns its name from the extraordinary botanical diversity — indigenous Afromontane forests, fynbos heathlands, and coastal vegetation create a year-round green corridor between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains and the Indian Ocean. Highlights include Tsitsikamma National Park, where ancient yellowwood forests meet a rugged coastline — home to the famous Storms River Mouth suspension bridge and world-class hiking trails. The Knysna Lagoon, flanked by towering sandstone Heads, is one of South Africa's most photographed landmarks and a gateway to pristine oyster beds and indigenous forests.
The Garden Route is an adventure playground. Bloukrans Bridge offers the world's highest commercial bungee jump (216 metres), sending thrill-seekers plunging into the Bloukrans River gorge. Kayak through the Knysna Lagoon spotting Knysna seahorses (the world's most endangered seahorse species), zipline through the Tsitsikamma canopy, or take a boat trip from Plettenberg Bay to spot dolphins, seals, and Southern Right whales (June–November). The Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn reveal 20-million-year-old limestone formations, while nearby ostrich farms offer unique encounters with the world's largest birds.
Hermanus, on the Garden Route's western edge, is acclaimed as one of the world's top land-based whale-watching destinations. From June to November, Southern Right whales migrate to Walker Bay to calve and nurse, often visible just metres from the cliff-top whale walk. The town even employs the world's only "whale crier" to alert visitors to sightings. Further east, Plettenberg Bay's marine reserve hosts humpback whales, Bryde's whales, and pods of common and bottlenose dolphins year-round. Our guided tours combine whale watching with wine tasting in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and penguin encounters at Stony Point.
The Garden Route enjoys a mild maritime climate year-round. December–February is peak summer with warm weather. September–November and March–May offer fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures. Whale season runs June–November. Rain can occur any time — pack layers!

The Garden Route is 4–5 hours from Cape Town, making day trips impractical. We recommend our multi-day packages. However, Hermanus whale watching is possible as a day trip from Cape Town (1.5 hours each way).
