Kruger National Park Travel Guide

Kruger National Park is Africa's most iconic wildlife sanctuary — a vast wilderness stretching nearly 20,000 km² across South Africa's northeastern corner. Home to the legendary Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) along with over 500 bird species and 147 mammal species, Kruger delivers the quintessential African safari experience.

The Ultimate Big 5 Safari Experience

Kruger National Park offers an unrivalled density and diversity of wildlife. Our open-vehicle game drives, led by qualified field guides with decades of bush experience, take you deep into the park's prime wildlife areas where sightings of lion prides, leopards in marula trees, elephant herds crossing the Sabie River, and rare white rhinos are regularly recorded. Unlike self-drive visitors confined to their cars, our open safari vehicles provide unobstructed 360° views and elevated vantage points — the way safari was meant to be experienced.

Safari Options for Every Schedule

Whether you have a single day or a full week, we've designed Kruger experiences for every itinerary. Full-day game drives depart at dawn and return by sunset, maximising your wildlife encounters during peak activity hours. Sunset and night drives reveal Kruger's nocturnal world — African wild cats, honey badgers, and the elusive aardvark. For the truly adventurous, our 3-hour guided bush walks bring you face-to-face with the African wilderness on foot, accompanied by armed rangers. Multi-day lodge safaris offer luxury tented camps and the rhythm of bush life — morning game drives, afternoon siestas, and campfire dinners under the Milky Way.

Beyond Kruger — The Panorama Route

No visit to the Kruger region is complete without the legendary Panorama Route. This scenic drive along the Drakensberg Escarpment reveals God's Window — a viewpoint overlooking 100km of lowveld bushland — the dramatic Blyde River Canyon (the world's largest green canyon), Bourke's Luck Potholes sculpted over millennia by swirling water, and the thundering Lisbon and Berlin waterfalls. Our guided Panorama Route tours combine these geological wonders with stops at roadside craft markets and traditional padstal (farm stall) lunches.

☀️ Best Time to Visit Kruger National Park

May to September (dry winter) is peak safari season — sparse vegetation and animals congregating at waterholes make wildlife easier to spot. October–April brings the "green season" with baby animals, migrant birds, and dramatic afternoon thunderstorms. Kruger is exceptional year-round.

✈️ Getting to Kruger National Park

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) and Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS) serve the region with daily flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Alternatively, our overland safari packages depart from Johannesburg (5-hour scenic drive). All tours include lodge/hotel transfers within the Kruger region.

Frequently Asked Questions — Kruger National Park Tours

Will I definitely see the Big 5?

While wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, our experienced guides have a 95%+ success rate for Big 5 sightings on multi-day safaris. Even on full-day game drives, most guests see 3–4 of the Big 5. Leopard is the most elusive.

Is Kruger malaria-free?

Kruger is in a low-risk malaria area. We recommend consulting your doctor about prophylaxis, especially October–April. Many guests choose our malaria-free Pilanesberg or Aquila alternatives instead.

What's the difference between Kruger and private reserves?

Kruger National Park offers incredible value and vast wilderness. Private reserves like Sabi Sands and Timbavati allow off-road tracking and night drives (not permitted in Kruger), with exclusive traversing rights and fewer vehicles per sighting.
