Every year from June to November, Southern Right Whales migrate to the sheltered waters of Walker Bay near Hermanus. Discover why this charming coastal town is officially the world's best land-based whale watching destination.
A Front-Row Seat to One of Nature's Greatest Shows
Every year between June and November, one of the most spectacular wildlife events on Earth unfolds along South Africa's Overberg Coast. Southern Right Whales β so named because early whalers considered them the "right" whale to hunt β migrate from Antarctic feeding grounds to the warm, sheltered waters of Walker Bay to breed and calve.
Why Hermanus?
Hermanus is officially recognised as the best land-based whale watching destination in the world. The town's unique geography β steep cliffs dropping directly into deep water β means whales often come within 10-20 metres of shore, providing breathtaking close-up views without even needing to board a boat.
The Whale Crier
Hermanus is home to the world's only Whale Crier β a town official who patrols the cliffs blowing a kelp horn to alert visitors when whales are spotted. It's a charming and uniquely South African tradition that has become famous worldwide.
Best Viewing Spots
- Cliff Path: The 12km coastal walkway from Grotto Beach to the New Harbour
- Die Gang: A natural rocky viewpoint near the Old Harbour
- Kwaaiwater: Often less crowded with excellent sightings
- Gearing's Point: Elevated viewpoint with 180-degree ocean views
Combine Whale Watching with Wine
The Hermanus Wine Route, including the acclaimed Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, produces some of South Africa's finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A whale watching and wine tasting day trip from Cape Town is one of our most popular experiences.
